I'm Clara Luz. A ย student at the California Institute of the Arts. I'm aiming to be a storyboard artist story artistย at some point.ย I adore experiencing life. The biggest source of story inspiration there is.
Picture this. Around 15 years ago, two migrant farmworker lawyers in Florida get SICK and TIRED of dealing with the ridiculous amount of stress and racist undertones from very backwards swamp lawyers they faced every day. No time to take care of the kids and meals consisted of McDonalds drive through. Stressed about health and family. They decide to take their two babies, a set of grandparents and themselves to live on a ranch somewhere in Mexico. It was always my dads dream to return to the town he was from. To become remote mountain people in the middle of nowhere Mexico. This is where I grew up.
Fields, grass, trees, cows as far as the eye can see. Cacti, sunbeams, tractors, mules all around. I was raised on a steady diet of classic movies and especially animated movies onย VHS tapes (which were the only thing we could watch for a while, given we didnโ€™t have tv yet) and a healthy dose of fine art in the form of art books and classical music in the form of my grandparents being Suzukiย teachers. One could describe my parents and grandparents colloquially as โ€˜nerdsโ€™.ย
Drawing was my closest friend on the ranch. Not much else to do but sketch and tell yourself stories. And well, now Iโ€™m here.
Here are some of my sketches from living over there.ย
There's more of it on my Calarts portfolio
